Advocaat, leraar conservatorium, toneelschrijver en regisseur Herman Van Overbeke werd geboren te Gent in 1895 op de Ketelvest. Later woonde hij in de Tijgerstraat 17. Zijn vader Alphonse Marie was journalist en directeur vanhet dagblad De Gentenaar ; zijn broer Jozef was professor in de rechten. Hij studeerde rechten aan de Rijksuniversiteit te Gent. Hij werd inspecteur bij het Ministerie van de Middenstand en leraar aan het Conservatorium te Gent.
