Eswatini (Swaziland), English in

English in Eswatini differs from English in most other Outer Circle countries because Eswatini is largely a monolingual/monocultural nation, with siSwati as its sole indigenous language. Contacts between siSwati and English started with the arrival of explorers and missionaries in the 1800s. English has since been a major part of Eswatini's life, having a prominent role in education and official administration in government and business. As a result, distinct features associated with Eswatini life and culture have emerged. This entry discusses some such features, following the world Englishes paradigm developed by Braj Kachru. The focus will be on uses, users and linguistic features. Though many linguistic features of Eswatini English may not be formally recognized and written down, they are nevertheless distinct and identifiable in Swazi usage.
