River Mouth Shifting and Horeline Change Analysis of Mangala River Mouth at Puri Coastline
View through CrossRef
Abstract
The shoreline environment has been considered as a major concern in most of the parts of the globe. A significant trend of both erosion and accretion are primarily experienced on the Puri coast of Bay of Bengal at mouth of river Mangala. The sand dunes are formed, so the river mouth is shifting towards town and a new mouth is beginning. The satellite images from the year 1998 to 2021 are used to detect the shoreline change and the river mouth shifting. The GIS tools as well as a compatible tool bar Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS) has been used to delineate the shoreline change and its corresponding hazards. It is found that, the shoreline of Mangala river mouth is accredited with an average rate of accretion of 3.49 m/yr. Total forty number transects are formed along with none as erosional transects which means all the transects formed undergo 100% of accretion. The percent of all transects that have statistically significant to accretion is 87.5%. The maximum value of accretion is 6.11 m/yr. This research intends to describe possible causes and consequences of shoreline changes of the Mangala river mouth and need for necessary precautionary measures.

It is found that, the shoreline of Mangala river mouth is accredited with an average rate of accretion of 3.
49 m/yr.
Total forty number transects are formed along with none as erosional transects which means all the transects formed undergo 100% of accretion.
The percent of all transects that have statistically significant to accretion is 87.
5%.
The maximum value of accretion is 6.
11 m/yr.
This research intends to describe possible causes and consequences of shoreline changes of the Mangala river mouth and need for necessary precautionary measures.
