Walter H. Bucher medal to Lynn R. Sykes

View through CrossRef
Lynn Sykes was born in Pittsburgh in 1937 and received his B.S. and M.S. degrees at MIT. He was awarded a Ph.D. degree by Columbia University in 1964, where he is now Professor of Geology and head of the Seismology Department at Lamont‐Doherty Geological Observatory. The American Geophysical Union's Walter H. Bucher Medal is awarded ‘for original contributions to the basic knowledge of the earth's crust.’ Lynn Sykes' contributions in this area are fundamental and wide‐ranging. It was his work during the mid‐1960's on earthquake focal mechanisms that showed that Tuzo Wilson's transform hypothesis for the strike‐slip faults that offset the axial valleys of oceanic ridges was supported by the instantaneous slip sense along these faults.
