Psychopharmacology and social psychiatry

Abstract The advent of modern psychopharmacology has shaped modern psychiatry like no other event. For the first time, it became possible to treat severe mental disorders effectively and at a scale. It also allowed mental disorders to be seen in a different light. There were repercussions for society as a whole. This chapter is about milestones in psychopharmacology and their impact on society. It will first look at psychiatry before the advent of psychopharmacology. Then, it will examine the social impact of psychopharmacology in five case studies. These case studies concern chlorpromazine, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, benzodiazepines, olanzapine, and amphetamines and other central stimulants. Finally, the chapter will give an outlook on future developments in psychopharmacology and their potential impact on society.
