61 BreatheSafe Drapes: Oxygen Diffusing Sterile Drapes to Reduce Surgeon Fatigue and Hypoxia During Long Operations
View through CrossRef
Abstract
Background
Behind every long operation is a surgeon silently enduring heat, sweat, and hours of restricted breathing. Prolonged use of sterile drapes and masks can create pockets of stagnant air, causing discomfort, reduced concentration, and subtle hypoxia. Current ventilation systems focus on the patient, not the surgeon. This project introduces BreatheSafe Drapes—sterile surgical drapes embedded with micro-oxygen diffusers that gently release oxygen into the surgeon’s breathing zone, enhancing alertness and comfort without compromising sterility.
Method
Prototype drapes used a three-layer composite: a sterile outer sheet, a central microporous layer with sodium percarbonate microcapsules (slow oxygen-releasing), and an inner diffusion membrane controlling gas flow. The system was tested in simulated 3-hour procedures with ten participants. Oxygen concentration, end-tidal CO2, and subjective fatigue were measured and compared to standard drapes. Sterility and thermal impact were also assessed.
Results
BreatheSafe Drapes increased local oxygen concentration by 2.4% (p < 0.05) and reduced reported fatigue by 35%. Participants reported improved comfort, focus, and less mask humidity. No contamination or temperature rise was observed. The prototype cost under £10 per unit and retained sterility after autoclave testing.
Conclusions
BreatheSafe Drapes protect both patient and surgeon. By merging comfort, safety, and sustainability, this innovation enhances surgical performance and wellbeing, offering a simple, low-cost, and practical solution for long operations.
