Multinational Corporations Involved in Right Abuses in Cameroon

This article explores the economic and legal context through which human rights are violated by multinational corporations in Cameroon. It discusses the legality of foreign investment in Cameroon and the economic development motive with the negative convergences of rights violations. This paper has examined the economic and environmental scope in which foreign businesses exploit resources in Cameroon and their relationship with various communities. At the core, the paper interprets human rights abuses by MNCs in Cameroon by analyzing their economic approaches in business. It explains the role of multinational corporations in the economy of Cameroon. It explains the activities of MNCs with an understanding how in the conduct of these activities’ rights are abused. A number of multinational corporations have been discussed and the acts associated with them which have consequences in Cameroon. Additionally, the article has given an explanation how their activities should be properly managed. Many multinational corporations do not impact the Cameroonian society positively due to economic and environmental damages inflicted in various communities. Notably, it is observed that their economic operations in Cameroon are against communities which have often provoked court cases, demonstrations, petitions, product or service boycotts. The style of operations of MNCs in Cameroon is to be checked since the legality behind human rights protection is uncertain. Based on the above, there is a need for a refocus in the foreign direct investment landscape across Cameroon particularly in defining and identifying what fall outside the scope of Multinational corporations.
