Auxiliary Selection

View through CrossRef
AbstractThe chapter provides an overview of auxiliary selection in the perfect tense. While in some languages there is only one perfect tense auxiliary, a number of languages show a split between perfects in which the equivalent ofto haveoccurs as auxiliary and perfects in which the equivalent ofto beoccurs as such. The first part of the chapter provides an overview of the relevant synchronic and diachronic data, mainly from Germanic and Romance languages. The second part discusses the various analyses that have been put forward in accounts of the occurrence of auxiliary splits.
