Following the tenure of Henry Smith, James Joseph Sylvester served as Savilian Professor of Geometry from 1883 to 1894. The first Jew to hold an Oxbridge chair, Sylvester came to Oxford from the inaugural professorship of mathematics at The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. While mainly focusing on his time in Oxford, this chapter contrasts the situations that Sylvester encountered at Oxford and Hopkins at the end of the 19th century.
