Gold nose ring with pendant, inlaid with coloured stones

View through Europeana Collections
The nose ring with flower-shaped decorations and a stone as a heart, sits through the nose shot. The pendant, in crescent form and with 13 movable sequins at the bottom, hangs on the lip. \Mrs Schols obtained the details of the manner of wearing from the man from whom she purchased the jewellery: D. Chandie Shaw, goldsmith, Waterkant 62 (above), in Paramaribo in February 1950 for 30 Surinamese guilders. She got the writing from Mr. C.R. Singh. According to a visitor to the museum in May 1953, Mr. Graart C.S.S.R., the correct spelling of the pendant is jhulni (with a dash on the i). \Mrs. Schols also received the following information about Hindustani jewellery: at the wedding the priest uses a leaf vein turned into a ring, later the groom gives the bride a silver or gold ring, angoethi.
