Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award Winning Picturebook’s Worldview Analysis

Readers trust children"s literature awards, which are awarded to excellent picture books. However, there is little information or research on the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award (ALMA), which is acclaimed as the largest prize in children"s literature. There is a need to discuss the influence that shakes the traditional values of cultural Marxism, which is emerging in the study of worldview of picture books, by applying it to ALMA-winning picture books. This is because the meaning of the readers" trust and that of subversion, which shakes traditional values, are opposite to each other. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to analyze the worldview of ALMA-winning picture books and to investigate the influence of cultural Marxism. As a result, it elucidates Astrid Lindgren"s life and the characteristics of works related to political and social movements. It also shows that the enactment purpose for the award-winning works contain the meaning of subversion that takes adult literature and puts children"s rights in front of it. The winning works show a psychoanalytic sexual liberation worldview, a surrealist worldview, a humanistic worldview, an ecological worldview, a global postmodern worldview, a nihilistic worldview, and a gnostic worldview. They contain cultural Marxism and critical theory that has spread out from the Institute for Social and Cultural Studies at Frankfurt University. Therefore, educators of children’s literature should reflect on the worldviews that will affect children’s cognitive, emotional, and moral development.
