Some tonal compositions impart impressions of purely musical drama not readily revealed by Schenkerian analysis alone. Arnold Schoenberg’s concept ofmusical problem,a component of his notion ofmusical idea,may aid in illuminating the contextual relations responsible for such dramatic effects within a Schenkerian view.
