The Woman as a Central Symbolic Dimension in Philosophical Intertextuality
View through CrossRef
This study explores the representation of women as a central symbolic and philosophical dimension in the narrative world of the Iraqi novelist Burhan Shawy, particularly within his Labyrinth novel series. The research investigates how the female figure functions not merely as a narrative character but as a philosophical sign through which questions of identity, authority, desire, and existence are examined. Drawing on the concept of philosophical intertextuality, the study analyzes how Shawy’s narrative discourse intersects with major philosophical perspectives concerning the body, power, alienation, and freedom. The analysis focuses on several thematic dimensions. First, the study examines the female body as a narrative and discursive space, revealing how Shawy presents the body as a site where structures of authority and social control operate, reflecting ideas associated with Michel Foucault’s philosophy of power and surveillance. Second, it explores the alienation experienced by women within restrictive cultural and social systems, highlighting the internal conflict between individual desire and imposed societal norms. Third, the research investigates the relationship between masculine dominance and the female pursuit of liberation, emphasizing the philosophical implications of gender relations through existential and feminist perspectives, particularly the ideas of Simone de Beauvoir. Finally, the study discusses the tension between sanctity and transgression in the representation of the female body, showing how Shawy’s narrative exposes the complex interaction between sacred cultural values and human desire. Through textual analysis of several novels from the Labyrinth series, the study demonstrates that the representation of women constitutes a central philosophical mechanism within Shawy’s narrative structure. The female figure becomes a medium through which broader questions about power, identity, and cultural values are critically examined.
