THE ROLE OF RURAL AREAS ON NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT: THE POLITICAL ECONOMY OF OKE-ILA ORANGUN

This paper examines the role of rural areas in Nigeria's economic development, with a specific focus on the political, social, and economic potential of Oke-Ila Orangun in Ifedayo Local Government, Osun State. Adopting a historical and descriptive research approach, the study analyzes past events, prevailing conditions, and existing practices to provide a comprehensive understanding of rural economic contributions. Secondary sources such as books, journal articles, newspapers, blog posts, and magazines were utilized for data collection. Findings reveal that rural areas account for over 70% of Nigeria's population, making them critical to the country's economic transformation. Oke-Ila Orangun emerges as a key contributor to Osun State's economy and Nigeria at large, with vast agricultural, industrial, and tourism potential. However, the study highlights the urgent need for capacity building and creative empowerment in rural areas to maximize their natural resources for productive and sustainable economic growth. To address these challenges, the paper recommends increased budgetary allocations to rural areas, direct involvement of traditional rulers in development planning, and a multi-level governance approach involving federal, state, and local authorities. Furthermore, it calls for active participation from individuals, corporate bodies, NGOs, and international organizations to tackle poverty, rural underdevelopment, and national economic stagnation.
