Power Quality Management Using Electrical Energy Audit Analysis in the Traction Testing Industry with Hybrid Energy Sources
View through CrossRef
Introduction:
A reliable and high-quality power source must remain continuously available,
exhibit a pure sinusoidal waveform, and operate within permissible limits of frequency and
magnitude. In traction testing industries, dynamic and high-power loads often introduce substantial
electrical disturbances, making an efficient and stable power supply vital for accurate testing
and operational reliability.
Methods:
This study presents an electrical energy audit conducted at a traction testing facility to
evaluate the impact of harmonic generation on both the grid and industrial systems. Measurements
were taken under different supply conditions, utility (EB), solar, and Diesel Generator (DG), using
a power quality analyzer to monitor voltage, current, power factor, voltage imbalance, and Total
Harmonic Distortion (THD) across multiple feeders.
Results:
The analysis revealed considerable voltage imbalance, reduced power factor, and THD
levels exceeding recommended standards. Implementation of an Active Harmonic Filter (AHF)
significantly mitigated these distortions, improving harmonic suppression, load balance, and overall
power quality. Comparative assessments demonstrated marked reductions in harmonic content
and enhancements in power factor following AHF integration.
Discussion:
The findings indicate that harmonic distortion is a major challenge in traction testing
operations, adversely affecting both equipment performance and energy efficiency. Incorporating
AHF technology, along with optimized hybrid power source management, ensures stable system
performance, minimizes THD-induced losses, and alleviates the burden on the utility grid.
Conclusion:
The study underscores that a structured electrical energy audit, combined with hybrid
power coordination, is a practical approach to achieving enhanced power quality, improved efficiency,
and reduced operational costs in industrial traction systems.
