AbstractDominique Octave Mannoni (1899–1989) was a French intellectual and civil servant whose 20‐year stay in Madagascar shaped his ethnopsychiatric interpretations of colonialism. Using two characters from William Shakespeare'sThe Tempest, he elaborated Prospero's inferiority complex and the Caliban or dependency complex in his best‐known book,Prospero and Caliban.The Psychology of Colonizationwhile undergoing analysis with French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan in Paris. His theories were famously opposed by Aimé Césaire and Frantz Fanon.
