In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Niki de Saint Phalle created a series of silkscreens, which can be interpreted as a kind of personal diary reflecting the dysfunctional family environment in which she grew up. Several years later, in her illustrated autobiography titled "Mon secret," she describes the "Summer of the Reptiles" and reveals that at the age of 11, she was a victim of sexual assault by her father. In the silkscreen belonging to the collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art, reptiles dominate the composition: they symbolize both the "Summer of the Reptiles" and the abuse she endured, as well as the fear she managed to overcome through her art.
