Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb on Horseback, Accompanied by Three Attendants

View through Harvard Museums
Within a scrolling vine and floral border is a drawing of a mounted, elderly Aurangzeb. He bears his distinct white beard and a turban. A halo encircles his head. He wears a jama (robe) with a sash tied at the waist. Tucked into the sash is a dagger and a sword. Draped across his body is a strap that is connected to a large shield. With his left hand he holds the reigns of his steed and with his right hand he holds what appears to be a turban ornament. Standing on either side of Aurangzeb’s horse are attendants. The one in the foreground carries a fly whisk over his right shoulder, a symbol of power. The third attendant leads the group.
