Abstract Essential Aloneness: Rome Lectures on DW Winnicott offers a series of DW Winnicott lectures delivered by Christopher Bollas in the 1980s to the Institute of Child Neuropsychiatry at the University of Rome. It primarily focuses on Winnicottian psychoanalytic theory and practice. Each chapter contains unique and distinct discussions as delivered with the aliveness that is a hallmark of in-person lectures. Essential Aloneness also considers how to use Winnicott’s concepts in clinical spaces. Moreover, Bollas brings a unique outlook to the challenges Winnicott’s thinking posed to the psychoanalytical, literary, and intellectual culture in the United Kingdom and overseas ten years after the passing of Winnicott.
