Les caractères du quartier Saint-Remi dans les années cinquante se résument en quelques mots : vétusté, vieillissement et dépeuplement, qui contribuent à accroître l'entropie du quartier, considéré ici comme un système. Le quartier devient un enjeu pour les forces concurrentes. Il y a contradiction entre l'image perçue du quartier et son image voulue par la municipalité. Les tensions favorisent restructuration complète ; après la rénovation, Saint-Remi devient un quartier de cadres et de services supérieurs.
