Modelling structural of groundwater behaviour in the crystalline aquifer of Pan-African granitoids at Bonis open pit quarry (East-Cameroon)
View through CrossRef
This paper aims to build the hydrogeological model in the crystalline aquifer rock mass made up of granitoids, governed by Sanaga’s fault network printed out during the Pan-African age at the Bonis’ concrete open pit quarry. Different geological successions as well as structural defects have been investigated. Moreover, electrical tomography by geophysical survey has permitted to access the piezometric level of groundwater together with the hydrogeological facilities built on site. Finaly physicochemical analysis of 6 groundwater samples were performed in order to assess pollution. The main geological formations are granite, gneiss, amphibolite, migmatite and breccias mylonite. Foliations (10°/ N310), joints (J1 (80°/N058), J2 (20°/N324), J3 (16°/N136), J4 (58°/N248)) and lithological contacts (30°/N075 and 10°/N176) characterize structural discontinuities found on these hard-rocks. The geophysical model shows strong electrical resistivities (>3000 &!.m) which indicate fresh but highly fractured crystalline formations with significant yield (2.61 m3h-1) and hydraulic conductivity (7.2×10-6 mh-1). The piezometric levels observed in 30 boreholes surrounding the open pit area, range from 696- 664 m above sea level. The availability of underground water is influenced by meteor water inputs and surface flows that feed the crystalline aquifer through the network of structural discontinuities. The high content of nitrate (150 mgl-1) and ammonium (10.5 mgl-1) is linked to the dissolution of emulsions and nitrate fuel used for blasting the rock mass of Bonis’ quarry, which making the water of questionable quality in relation to WHO recommendations.

Title: Modelling structural of groundwater behaviour in the crystalline aquifer of Pan-African granitoids at Bonis open pit quarry (East-Cameroon)
Description:
The geophysical model shows strong electrical resistivities (>3000 &!.
m) which indicate fresh but highly fractured crystalline formations with significant yield (2.
61 m3h-1) and hydraulic conductivity (7.
2×10-6 mh-1).
The piezometric levels observed in 30 boreholes surrounding the open pit area, range from 696- 664 m above sea level.
The availability of underground water is influenced by meteor water inputs and surface flows that feed the crystalline aquifer through the network of structural discontinuities.
The high content of nitrate (150 mgl-1) and ammonium (10.
5 mgl-1) is linked to the dissolution of emulsions and nitrate fuel used for blasting the rock mass of Bonis’ quarry, which making the water of questionable quality in relation to WHO recommendations.
