The Dream by Marcantonio Raimondi.
After examining the specificity of the depicted theme -a dream -as well as the methodological issues it raises, the author links Marcantonio Raimondi's print, executed c. 1508, with the interest in enigma that was so prevalent in contemporary Venetian humanist culture (Hypnerotomachia Poliphili). Through the examination of associated motifs drawn from Venetian allegories of Voluptas, Boschian imagery of Virgil's damnation and Inferno, as well as the support of the Hippocratic and Aristotelian theories on dreams that were the object of renewed interest in Venice and Padua at that period, the author offers an interpretation of this image as a dream of melancholy.
