The rejection of Saul is compared and contrasted with the rejection of the house of Eli. The rejection of Eli is another upheaval of retribution, indicated in 1 Sam 2:25, where God prevents Eli’s sons from repenting because God delighted to kill them. Eli’s sons break universal laws, but Eli’s offence is a command he could not keep, like Saul’s transgressions. Although there are many elements of proportionality in the punishment on the house of Eli, it is not retribution because there is no restoration. The violence against the house of Eli is created by divine departure of the ark, rather than active enmity. Later priestly politics, and Zadokite support for the Davidic kings, probably lies behind these narratives as Eli’s replacement will remain loyal to the Davidic king.
