The Process of Alienation
View through CrossRef
This draft chapter marks Woodward’s attempt to convert a lecture into a book chapter. It draws on the content of the first Fleming lecture but expands significantly on the experiences of the Grimke sisters, Sarah and Angelina. Although the chapter begins and ends with James G. Birney, Woodward pays particular attention to the ways in which the Grimke sisters struggled to put ideological commitments into practice. It was one thing for the Grimkes to condemn slavery but another to renounce the privileges and the comfort they derived from the family’s slaveholding wealth. In all cases, the crisis was accompanied by religious strivings and a conversion—sometimes a succession of conversions. These experiences never entirely fulfilled the craving for a new self and a new purpose. The period of crisis for the Grimkes and Birney varied in duration and intensity.
