Heroic Homosociality and Homophobia in the Helgi Poems

Abstract
This chapter forms part of a pair with Chapter 1, and explores the Helgi poems's perspective on masculinity and homosociality through the character of Helgi Hundingsbani and his namesake Helgi Hjörvarðsson. It also introduces the work of another theoretician of gender and sexuality, Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, as another way of bringing contemporary perspectives to bear into dialogue with medieval texts.
