Bridging generations: the role of artistic expression in fostering intergenerational solidarity in Zambia

View through CrossRef
Purpose This study aims to examine how artistic expression fosters intergenerational solidarity in Zambia, framed by social capital theory and Ubuntu as an African gerontological lens. It explores art’s role in bridging generational divides, preserving cultural heritage and strengthening cohesion amid demographic change. Design/methodology/approach A desk review was conducted, thematically analysing over 30 policy documents, reports and publications. A structured search covered sources from 2000 to 2024, capturing both historical and contemporary perspectives. Findings Artistic expression supports knowledge transfer and national values across generations, illustrating how these frameworks operate in practice. While Ubuntu offers a culturally grounded ethic of reciprocity, social capital theory developed largely in Western contexts, may understate African communal realities. Digital platforms offer new opportunities for engagement, though limited access for older adults remain a barrier. Few intergenerational arts projects exist, those implemented challenge stereotypes and encourage mutual respect. Research limitations/implications Limitations include reliance on secondary sources, limited Zambia-specific and longitudinal studies and insufficient analysis of technology constrain depth. Addressing these gaps would clarify how artistic exchanges evolve and sustain solidarity. Practical implications Policymakers, educators and arts organisations should integrate intergenerational programmes into policies, curricula and community initiatives while expanding funding and digital inclusion. Social implications Artistic expression promotes intergenerational solidarity, challenges stereotypes and preserves heritage. Originality/value This study addresses scarce research on artistic expression as a vehicle for intergenerational solidarity in Zambia, extending global debates on ageing, culture and social capital to inform policy and practice.
