A CRITICAL STUDY OF PINTU PRASAD, RENOWNED ARTIST OF TERRACOTTA SCULPTURE

This research paper presents a critical study of the artistic journey of the renowned terracotta sculptor Pintu Prasad, who won the 2023 National Handicrafts Award (President's Honour) for his masterpiece, "Ekadash Mukhi Ganesh." Born in Barki Nainijor village in the Buxar district of Bihar, Pintu Prasad received intensive training in terracotta art at the Upendra Maharathi Shilp Anusandhan Sansthan (Upendra Maharathi Institute of Industrial Design) in Patna. He fulfills the multifaceted roles of sculptor, educator, and art conservator; moreover, his art bridges the terracotta tradition—dating back to the Indus Valley Civilization—with contemporary sensibilities. His artworks exemplify a harmonious blend of environmental sustainability, cultural preservation, and socio-religious values—such as his depiction of Lord Ganesh as a child resting on a *charpai* (traditional cot). In terms of technique, he primarily utilizes red clay, which is prepared by mixing it with surkhi (brick dust) and ash to prevent cracking. Pintu Prasad's distinctive expertise lies in his ability to retrieve a clay sculpture from the kiln as a single, intact piece, without sustaining any damage. He prefers using indigenous kilns (*awa*), in which he employs cow-dung cakes and weeds as fuel, as he believes this imparts a superior texture to the terracotta. He has also crafted replicas of Sita and Lav-Kush for the Bihar Museum.
