Bishnu Prasad Rabha was born on the 31st of January, 1909 in Dhaka which is now in Bangladesh and was part of pre-independent India. Bishnu Prasad Rabha’s father was Gopal Chandra Rabha and his mother was Gethi Das. Rabha took active part in the freedom movement of India in his college days. Even though he went to various colleges like St. Paul’s Cathedral Mission College in Kolkata, Victoria College in Cooch Behar, Karmail College in Rongpur, his college education remained incomplete because of his active participation in the struggle against the British. He participated in the Non-cooperation movement led by Gandhiji in 1930. After India’s independence in 1947, Rabha started revolting against the inhuman exploitation of the general people by the rich Jamindars (landlords), for which he developed enmity with the government had had to remain in disguise from the vigilant eyes. For the liberation of the poor and downtrodden common people, he joined the Communist Party. For the liberation of the people he held a pen in one hand and a stein-gun in the other. Bishnu Rabha dreamt of an egalitarian society. In this research paper an attempt will be made to study Bishnu Prasad Rabha’s contribution to the struggle for India’s independence and his struggles for the liberation of the poor and downtrodden common people as a member of the Communist Party.
