Nanotechnology for restorative dentistry: a review

Scientists are interested in nanotechnology research because of its multiple applications in engineering and medicine. As nanotechnology involves material quality enhancement, it might also be used in dentistry and medical. Thus, this review aimed to investigate the various uses of nanoscale materials in restorative dentistry. This review was performed through an electronic literature search for relevant studies identified using keywords on the MEDLINE database from 2015 to 2022, including nanotechnology, restorative dentistry, composite, and mechanical properties. Similar keywords were used to search and identify relevant articles on Google Scholar. The papers in this review were published between 2015 and 2022. It was found that the use of nanotechnology in dentistry has enormous potential to improve the standard of care. Dispersion of nanoscale structures in restorative materials might improve mechanical qualities such as fracture toughness, flexural strength, and diametric strength. Nanotechnology could alter the mechanical qualities of restorative materials, such as wear resistance and shear bond strength, in addition to their flexural strength. The nano-sized materials used, their content, and the extra materials employed in addition to nano-based restorative materials affect how well the aforementioned mechanical qualities are improved.
