Michael Wolgemut und zwei weitere Künstlerbildnisse

View through Europeana Collections
As an illustration of his 1759 “General Artist History,” Knorr stached a view of three portraits of artists in different frames, including a portrait of Dürer’s teacher Michael Wolgemut (1434-1519). The portraits are provided with identifying names and numbered. The Wolgemut painting also bears the Dürer monogram and the year “1508.” The portrait is based on the so-called Wolgemut Medal, which was born in the middle of the 16th century at the earliest, and is based on Dürer’s 1516 finished painting (now on loan from the Bavarian state painting collections Munich in Nuremberg, Germanisches Nationalmuseum, Inv.-Nr. Gm885). The dating “1508” and the monogram Dürer are also examples of the medal. (Cf. Mende 1983, p. 250) It was not least for this reason that Heller included the work under the heading “After Dürer’s paintings and drawings made leaves” in his 1827 published Dürer publication. (Cf. Heller Dürer 1827 II.916,2520)
