Abstract
Of the six authors who occupy chapters in this book, only Henry Adams is well known for having sustained an interest in the cultus of Mary. A pivotal chapter in The Education of Henry Adams, the autobiographical work that supports his current literary reputation, juxtaposes medieval Mariology with the new technology of the dynamo. The Virgin of Chartres had likewise occupied center stage in his earlier Mont Saint Michel and Chartres and in the highly personal verses he called his “Prayer to the Virgin of Chartres.”
