Morris Swadesh (1909–1967) was an influential mid‐twentieth‐century Americanist and linguist, who specialized in language origins and comparative relationships. He is noted for proposing the tool of glottochronology, using lexical statistics to attempt to determine how closely two languages might be related by examining lists of supposedly cross‐culturally universal terms.
