This introduction provides an overview of the Winburg town and district. On the eve of the South African War of 1899–1902, Winburg was the chief town of a large district. The Winburg district comprised five wards: Winburg, Vetrivier, Zandrivier, Taaiboschspruit, and Onder-Wittebergen. It included two towns, Winburg and Senekal, as well as the villages of Ventersburg and Smaldeel. With very few exceptions the people of the Winburg district were involved in agriculture. This introduction first discusses farming in the Winburg district before turning to social changes experienced by Winburg due to productive expansion in the 1880s and 1890s. It also describes Winburg’s cosmopolitan towns and its political background and concludes with a brief chronology of the South African War.
