Abstract
Biblical theology as a distinct discipline was born in a 1787 lecture by J. P. Gabler. Gabler distinguished biblical theology, which has historical origins and concerns what the biblical writers thought about divine matters, from dogmatic theology, which has didactic origins and concerns what theologians philosophize rationally about divine matters. Gabler envisioned two stages in doing biblical theology: first, evaluating by careful exegesis the ideas of each biblical author; and second, analyzing these ideas to derive universal theological concepts where the biblical authors agree.
