Loving the World

A problem of our time is how to deal with globalization. One idea, often proposed as part of a solution to this problem, is that we love the world. But is loving the world good? If so, why? These questions are important because if we do not answer them, we shan't know what exactly loving the world is, or whether the world is worth loving, or whether loving the world makes one better off. In answer to the question, this paper argues that loving the world is good because (1) it elevates the lover´s sense of self-worth, (2) it tends to lead us to protect the world, (3) it tends to lead us to avoid harming the earth and other human beings, (4) it supports relationships that tend to promote peace and cooperation among individuals and groups, (5) it tends to promote the well-being of those who love the world, (6) it promotes knowledge of the earth and humanity, and self-knowledge, (7) it promotes people's acting in accordance with ethical requirements, (8) it tends to lead us to attunement to the earth and our fellow humans. 186 WORDS.
