Marble, Metopes, and Marathon: Reinterpreting the Athenian Treasury

The Athenian Treasury at Delphi, constructed after the Battle of Marathon in 490 BCE, is understood as a votive offering to Apollo commemorating the Athenians' victory over the Persians. This paper argues instead that the treasury functioned more as an assertion of Athenian political and cultural superiority within the Panhellenic landscape of the sanctuary. With the placement, materials, inscriptions, and iconographic program of the thirty metopes, this paper reinterprets the monument as an exercise in conspicuous consumption and political promotion rather than collective piety. This paper also proposes a new interpretation of where the thirty metopes were placed, which depict the deeds of Herakles and Theseus alongside the Amazonomachy scenes. Athens' civic hero, Theseus, with the Panhellenic hero Herakles, sends a message proclaiming Athens' preeminence among the Greek poleis and their recognition that the battle with Persia was not completely settled and would require an alliance with the other poleis. The west façade concealed the placement of metopes showing both heroes combating the Amazons together, reflecting the intuitive knowledge that the Persians would need to be battled alongside Athens and their allies.
