Hepatoprotective potential of medicinal plants of Kazakhstan: a review

Liver diseases represent a significant global health challenge, underscoring the need for safe and effective hepatoprotective agents from natural sources. Kazakhstan’s rich and diverse flora provides numerous medicinal plants traditionally used for liver ailments. This review evaluates the hepatoprotective potential of seven Kazakhstani species Glycyrrhiza glabra, Glycyrrhiza uralensis, Silybum marianum, Berberis heteropoda, Artemisia absinthium, Arctium lappa, and Arctium tomentosum focusing on their phytochemical composition, pharmacological mechanisms, and experimental evidence. Special attention is given to their efficacy in models of chemically induced hepatotoxicity, particularly carbon tetrachloride (CCl₄), as well as their anti-inflammatory and antifibrotic activities, highlighting their promise as sources of novel hepatoprotective agents. The reviewed Kazakhstani plants demonstrate substantial hepatoprotective activity through multiple complementary mechanisms. Glycyrrhiza species, rich in glycyrrhizin and glabridin, exert anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, mitigating hepatic steatosis and fibrosis in CCl₄-induced liver injury models. Silybum marianum, a primary source of silymarin, stabilizes hepatocyte membranes, promotes liver regeneration, and normalizes serum enzyme levels. Berberis heteropoda, containing berberine, protects against toxin-induced hepatic damage by modulating oxidative stress and apoptosis. Artemisia absinthium and both Arctium species display strong antioxidant potential, reducing malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and restoring endogenous antioxidant enzyme activity. Collectively, these findings indicate that the hepatoprotective properties of these plants are largely mediated through the suppression of oxidative stress and inflammation, key drivers of liver pathology. These results highlight the therapeutic potential of Kazakhstan’s medicinal flora as a source of novel hepatoprotective agents and emphasize the need for further phytochemical, pharmacological, and clinical investigations to validate traditional uses.
