Dio on the Simple and Self-Sufficient Life

View through CrossRef
Abstract This is not a very self-sufficient use of quotations, but I hope it suggests how attitudes towards the simple life are not that simple. Dio himself is something of a paradox in this matter. Though he was a member of the upper class of his native city, Prusa, he embraced aspects of Cynic philosophy. During his exile under Domitian, he even lived, or imagined himself living, as a poor, travelling Cynic. His life, then, raises several problems.
