Assyria and Its Image in Hosea

View through CrossRef
Abstract Hosea 4–14 frequently mentions Assyria. By comparing the rhetoric of these chapters to what we know from Assyrian historical records, we see that these chapters clearly know how Assyrian domination of Israel operated and how Israel responded. Hosea focuses on the economic and social impact of Assyrian domination on the kingdom of Israel. He castigates the Israelite elite who bolster their own position by cooperating with Assyria. He highlights how their extraction of resources from the populace to pay tribute to Assyria weakens the kingdom of Israel rather than strengthening it. He pays special attention to the experience of the Israelite ambassadors who journey to Assyria to remit tribute. This essay engages the historical background and theological message of Hos. 5:11–6:3; 7:1–7; 9:1–3; 12:1–2 (Eng. 11:12–12:1); 14:2–9 (Eng. 14:1–8), and briefly discusses chs. 1–3.
