Leaning over a railing, the king throws the golden cup into the sea. Behind him are his crown and his scepter on a tabooth, behind it the king’s entourage. Preliminary drawing for the corresponding steel engraving in: Outlines of Goethe’s works in 92 leaves in steel engraving with Goethe’s portrait after May, Stuttgart 1840.
