Pierre Vidal-Naquet aimait se présenter comme un intellectuel engagé/dégagé. Historien, il rappelait qu’il l’était de quatre manières différentes : historien de la Grèce, historien des crises et des crimes contemporains, historien des Juifs mais aussi historien de « l’histoire de l’histoire ». Il était encore un homme de fidélité dont les Mémoires accordent les engagements à une histoire familiale qui est l’un des ressorts de son œuvre.
