Precise Joy

Chapter 2 looks at the activism of the New York Young Lords Party from 1969 to 1972. It analyzes performances of joy in two aspects of the Young Lords’ media strategy—photography and direct-action campaigns—to examine how they pushed back against the gendered and racialized stereotypes of activists that the mainstream media promoted. The chapter proposes that the feminist interventions of the Women’s Caucus allowed the Young Lords to consider the role affect plays in activism, thus making room for what I term “precise” joy—joy enacted deliberately and with activist purpose. It also warns, however, that while precise joy claimed space for non-traditional performances of gender, access to performing joy was ultimately policed by the same gender norms that the Women’s Caucus fought against
