Liman von Sanders, General Otto Karl Victor (1855–1929)

Abstract
A German officer who gained his reputation during World War I, serving in Turkey and Palestine, Liman is clearly the only imperial German officer to rise to such a prominent status despite being of Jewish ancestry. Born on February 18, 1855 in Stolp, Pomerania (now Slupsk, Poland) into a landowner family and to paternal grandparents who had converted from Judaism, he joined the German Imperial Army in 1874 as an infantry officer, but soon was reassigned to the cavalry. In 1877 he married Amalie von Sanders, who bore him three daughters. He held command and staff positions, received the rank of generalmajor in 1908, and was promoted to the rank of generalleutnant and a division commander in 1911. In July 1913 Liman was ennobled by Kaiser Wilhelm II and added his late wife's maiden name to his, becoming Liman von Sanders.
