Many Pasts

View through CrossRef
This chapter places Vidya Bharati’s history teaching in a wider context. To achieve this, it presents a comparison of the organization’s social science textbooks, as described in the previous chapter, with Uttarakhand’s state board textbook and the textbooks published by the central government institution, National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT). The differences between the Vidya Bharati and NCERT textbooks turn out to be vast. The general conclusion is that the NCERT textbooks, while not free from omissions and from leaning towards one political direction, are more detailed and balanced in how they present Indian history, especially in comparison to Vidya Bharati textbooks.
