Carving stone, used by artisans in the local hamlets of Rankin Inlet and Baker Lake, is quarried in a small-scale operation on the south side of Cross Bay, Chesterfield Inlet. This report presents a preliminary petrographic description and comparison of the
currently quarried carving stone, and of similar materials from other sites identified in the course of regional bedrock mapping during the 1998 field season in the Gibson Lake-Cross Bay area.
