The Palestinian problem was never for Said merely a scholarly or academic issue. Rather, it was the concern of his life, experienced in practical and abstract terms. It influenced, directly or indirectly, the totality of his intellectual production and behavior. Thus, this article proposes that Said’s vision cannot be revealed solely through an examination of his direct writings on the Palestinian problem, but rather through an investigation of his entire intellectual oeuvre alongside his own conduct. In the light of this, the article attempts an analysis of the impact of the question of Palestine on Said the exile, the out-of-place, the intellectual, and the political activist. Said’s value concerning the Palestinian problem and the Arab-Israeli conflict derives from the internal and external structural harmony felt between his discourse and his behavior. His views stem from the position of the full-fledged intellectual with a humanist outlook, not that of the professional political analyst, or the partisan.
