Cyborg Laughter

View through CrossRef
Abstract This chapter examines three areas within the field of computational humor: (1) the history of research on AI joke generation; (2) the inadvertent humor of computational glitches and predictive errors; and, most speculatively, (3) the possibilities of nonhuman humor. In the process, it considers a broad range of computational media forms and case studies, including video games, Twitterbots, and autocorrect software. The essay concludes by exploring how forms of machine learning (specifically, generative adversarial networks, or GANs) mirror the cognitive operations involved in joke comprehension. In place of traditional views that would consider humor uniquely human, this chapter proposes humor as a form of adversarial learning that anticipates recent protocols of artificial intelligence.
