What would it look like to approach the text we now call the Gospel according to Mark as unfinished notes, as opposed to a book published by an author? Chapter 7 argues that the internal structure of the Gospel according to Mark looks more like the structure of hypomnēmata than like a narrative, biography, history, or other form of finished literature. It also investigates the link between authored books and monological unity. It argues that there are multiple, competing, and unresolved voices within the text of the Gospel according to Mark on issues like the messianic secret, christology, Jesus’s power, and various other topics.
