Anti-doping and sport

Abstract Doping is fundamentally contrary to the spirit of sport. This chapter outlines the aims of anti-doping programmes to protect athletes from prohibited doping methods, and to maintain the integrity of sport in terms of respect for rules, other competitors, fair competition, a level playing field, and the value of clean sport to the world. The chapter covers the World Anti-Doping Agency’s ‘play true’ guidelines, the prohibited list, anti-doping rule violations, the anti-doping administration system (ADAMS), and outlines the anti-doping process from initial notification of a test, through sampling, to final reporting. Subsequent sections examine supplement use, therapeutic use exemptions, and the use of the Athlete Biological Passport (ABP). Finally, the chapter outlines consequences of doping, the current scale of anti-doping tests performed, and the roles and responsibilities of the sports physician.
