EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AND ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AMONG B.ED STUDENTS

This research was designed to explore emotional intelligence and academic performance of B.Ed students. The purpose of the present study was to investigate between the emotional intelligence and academic performance for B.Ed students will be expected to explore the relationship and gender differences between these variables. The research design used was the quantitative correlational research design. The subjects of the study were B.Ed students from public sector universities of Sindh, Pakistan. The sample size used for the study is 300 students using simple random sampling and 272 valid responses were used in the final analysis. Data gathering instruments used were a structured questionnaire with the Likert Scale with a scale ranging from 1 to 5. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation and independent sample t-test were conducted and SPSS software was used in analyzing the collected data. It has been found that the emotional intelligence and academic performance of the B.Ed students is at a moderate level. The results of the Pearson correlations revealed significant positive correlation between EI and students' achievement score, demonstrating that emotional intelligence had significant positive relationship with their academic achievement score. In addition, difference between males and females was found in emotional intelligence and academic performance of school students through the results of independent sample t test where the female students scores in emotional intelligence and academic performance were higher than the male students scores. The study concluded that emotional Intelligence has significant role in improving academic achievement in the Students of B.Ed. It is suggested that emotional intelligence development program be included into ed programs of higher education institutions to boost the academic and job performance of academicians.
